(24km/15m SW of central London) Racecourse opened in 1875 and unusual in that both flat and jumping races of top quality are run there. The highlight of the season is the April meeting, popularly known as the Whitbread meeting. The Whitbread Gold Cup, a steeplechase of 3 miles 5 furlongs (5.8km), was established in 1957 and was one of the first examples in Britain of the commercial sponsorship of sport. The important race of the July meeting is the Eclipse Stakes, a flat race for 3-year-olds and upwards over 1 mile 2 furlongs (2km); it was first run in 1886.
