Paul Sandby
|
|
(1730–1809) Artist who was the first major figure in the British tradition of landscape *watercolours and the first to publish *aquatints (beginning with views of Wales in 1775). With its ability to achieve the effect of a tonal wash, aquatint chimed perfectly with the fashion for watercolours and provided over the next half century the most attractive form of British topographical print.
