Publishers of acting editions of plays, whose products have long been an indispensable part of the amateur theatre in English-speaking countries. The British firm derives from a publishing house set up in London in 1830 by an actor, Thomas Lacy. In 1872 his business was bought by Samuel French, who moved to London in that year after establishing (from 1854) a similar enterprise in New York. The firm of Samuel French still has separate British and American branches.
