(8km/5m NW of Bradford) Model industrial village on the river Aire built between 1851 and 1872 by Titus Salt (1803–76, bt 1869) to house the workers for his spinning and weaving mills. It was a consciously paternalistic venture, with decent housing in a country setting, provision for education, health and worship, and no public house. The buildings survive virtually unchanged.
