Salic Law
|
|
Legal system of the 6C Salian Franks, which included a clause that daughters cannot inherit land. In 14C France this was quoted as the authority for a new restriction on women, preventing their succession to the throne. This late version of the Salic Law became accepted in many European kingdoms, though never in Britain. Victoria was therefore able to inherit the British crown in 1837 but not that of *Hanover.
