St Martin-in-the-Fields

(London WC2)
Church built 1722–6 to the design of James *Gibbs. Its interior, with balconies along each side, and its pillared classical portico set in front of a tall steeple were details much copied elsewhere, particularly in America. The first church service to be broadcast on radio came from here in 1924, and this was the original home of the *Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
