St Helena

Island of volcanic origin in the south Atlantic, occupied from 1659 by the *East India Company as a port of call for their ships on the journey to and from the east. Ceded to the crown in 1834, it is now a British dependent territory. Its fame derives from the six years (1815–21) which *Napoleon spent there, living and dying in Longwood (a house which survives) as a prisoner of the British after his defeat at Waterloo.
