St Clement Danes
|
|
(London WC2) Church by *Wren at the east end of the Strand where it joins Fleet Street, standing nowadays in the middle of the road with traffic streaming round it. Bombed in the war and reconstructed, it is now associated in particular with the RAF and contains many memorials and rolls of honour. Statues of the leaders of Fighter Command and Bomber Command, *Dowding and *Harris, stand in front of the church. It claims to be the St Clement's featured in *Oranges and Lemons and these fruits are given to local children in an annual ceremony.
