St Albans

(80,000 in 1991)
City in Hertfordshire, on the other side of the river Ver from the Roman site of *Verulamium. The cathedral (11–14C) is the church of a *Benedictine abbey, founded in the 8C on the hill where St *Alban was believed to have been martyred. The church was in a dilapidated state by 1877, when it was heavily restored to become the cathedral of a new diocese covering Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
