An idea introduced at *Longleat in 1966 and soon imitated elsewhere. It was the brainchild of a circus owner, Jimmy Chipperfield (1912–90). In pleasant English parkland he combined the close proximity of creatures in a zoo with the motorized viewing of an African game park, allowing tourists the pleasure of driving among concentrated groups of large wild animals.
