(London E1) In 1683 Thomas Sadler opened a music house at some medicinal wells here, a short distance to the north of the old city of London. He thus began a link with entertainment which has lasted intermittently to this day. A theatre built in 1765 had *Grimaldi as its star attraction from 1802. The present theatre was built by Lilian Baylis in 1927–31 and became the cradle of the *Royal Ballet, the *Birmingham Royal Ballet and the *English National Opera.
