Vita Sackville-West
|
|
(1892–1962) Gardener and writer who grew up at *Knole – an experience which provided material for many of her books and inspired her greatest achievement, the creation of *Sissinghurst. Her partner in this was the diplomat and biographer Harold Nicolson (1886–1968), whom she married in 1913. It was a happy marriage, though both were more passionately involved in homosexual friendships. Two of Vita's have received much attention (with Violet Trefusis and Virginia *Woolf). Vita was short for Victoria.
