(16km/10m SE of Dumfries) Village known for the outstanding Celtic cross in its parish church. The central shaft (5.5m/18ft high, carved in the 8C) is decorated with scenes from the life of Christ and has an inscription in *runes recounting (from the cross's point of view) the events of the crucifixion. The text is part of an Old English poem known as The Dream of the Rood.
