Times (William Howard Russell, 1820–1907, kt 1895) The first war correspondent in the modern sense. He went out with the troops to the *Crimea in 1854 and sent back regular articles to the *Times, written with a passionate intensity and describing the appalling conditions in which the men were living. Strongly disapproved of by the military authorities, these were the earliest first-hand immediate reports of a military action and they had an effect similar to the television news from Vietnam. They were largely what inspired Florence *Nightingale to undertake her mission. Russell continued to report from the front line until the *Zulu War of 1879, by which time he was writing for the Daily Telegraph.
