runes
|
|
The letters of a Germanic alphabet, dating from the 3rd century AD or earlier and possibly derived from the Etruscan script. Common to northwest Europe and Scandinavia, runes were used for inscriptions in Britain by the *Anglo-Saxons, who adapted and enlarged the alphabet to accommodate the sounds of Old *English. One of the runic letters, the thorn, is still widely familiar on signs beginning with the words *'ye olde'.
