(London SW1) Britain's foremost society of gardeners, established in 1804 at a meeting at *Hatchard's convened by John Wedgwood and Joseph *Banks. The fortnightly flower shows for members at Vincent Square continue a tradition going back to the 1830s, and the Society's annual public show, now known as the *Chelsea Flower Show, has been held in *Ranelagh Gardens since 1913. In its centenary year, 1904, the RHS took possession of its famous garden at *Wisley. It also keeps smaller gardens elsewhere – since 1988 Rosemoor, near Great Torrington in Devon, and more recently Hyde Hall in Essex.
