Royal Armouries

Britain's oldest museum, deriving from the collection of armour and weapons gathered in the *Tower of London by *Henry VIII. After his death in 1547 this became virtually a private museum, until *Charles II opened it in the 1660s to the paying public. Many rarities and a wide range of conventional weapons have been added in succeeding centuries; the activities of the *East India Company brought in a superb selection of oriental armour. In 1996 the main part of the collection moved to a custom-built home in Leeds, but the link with the Tower remains. The artillery is mainly on show in Fort Nelson, at Fareham, overlooking Portsmouth harbour.
