Royal Armoured Corps
|
|
Formed in 1939 to combine under one central control the mechanized units of the army. These included all the ancient cavalry regiments except the *Household Cavalry; the units within the Royal Armoured Corps still bear their regimental cavalry names as Dragoon Guards, Hussars or Lancers. The other part of the new corps was the only section of the army to have begun its existence in mechanized form, the Royal Tank Regiment. The first *tanks went into action in 1916; by 1917 the Tank Corps was established, becoming the Royal Tank Corps in 1923 and then the Royal Tank Regiment (still the name today) when absorbed in 1939 within the Royal Armoured Corps.
