The club at St Andrews, on the east coast of Scotland, which is the accepted international authority on the rules of *golf. It was established originally in 1754, as the Society of St Andrews Golfers; the only club of greater antiquity is the one now at *Muirfield. The Royal and Ancient also organizes and regularly plays host to the *Open. The course, known as the Old course, can lay claim to be the most famous in the world. It was reduced in 1764 from 22 holes to the 18 which subsequently became the standard number.
