(1756–1827) English caricaturist, whose easy line and rich gallery of stock characters make his vast output instantly recognizable; the curves of the wenches' bosoms and buttocks, and of their elderly admirers' paunches, are a recurrent theme. His watercolours – in effect pen-and-ink drawings with a wash – range from often charming countryside scenes to the grosser delights of the town. His series of etchings include the adventures of Dr *Syntax (3 vols, 1813–21) and the many plates in Ackermann's Microcosm of London (3 vols, 1808–10), where he added the figures which enliven the architectural drawings of Augustus Charles Pugin. He also did some remarkably robust pornographic prints, which became more widely known after being published in book form in the 1980s.
