(1857–1932, KCB 1911) Bacteriologist known for his discovery in 1897–8 of the life history of the malarial parasite and its transmission by the mosquito, thus proving the theory first put forward in 1894 by 'Mosquito Manson' (Patrick Manson, 1844–1922). He was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1902, the second year of the awards.
