Roslin Chapel
|
|
(10km/6m S of Edinburgh) This small 15C chapel (originally the choir of an uncompleted church) is known for its intricate stone carving and in particular for the Prentice Pillar, a richly decorated single column with spiral banding. It is named from the tradition that it was carved by an apprentice when his master was absent; the mason on his return, in a fit of professional jealousy, struck and killed the boy genius.
