Rose Theatre
|
|
The first theatre on London's *Bankside, built in 1586–7 and demolished in 1606. Here *Alleyn made his name and it may have been here that *Shakespeare's first play (one part of Henry VI) was performed. The theatre's foundations were discovered in the summer of 1989, during excavation for an office block, and an appeal was launched to preserve them. By the early 1990s they were intact but relatively inaccessible beneath the completed building.
