(1959) The central play of a trilogy by Arnold Wesker. It takes place in a farm cottage in Norfolk, where Beatie Bryant awaits the arrival of her boyfriend, Ronnie Kahn, a young London intellectual. She patronizes her long-suffering family with his pretentious theories; but at the end, when a letter arrives from Ronnie breaking off their relationship, the shock makes her discover for the first time a voice of her own.
