Rokeby Venus

(c.1650, National Gallery) The name by which Velázquez's Toilet of Venus is known in Britain – because from 1813 to 1905 it was at Rokeby Park, a Palladian mansion in the county of Durham. The first masterpiece to be saved for the nation by the *National Art Collections Fund, it was the object of a notorious attack a few years later, in 1914, when it was slashed by a suffragette.
