rockery
|
|
A favourite feature in many British gardens, providing a home for rock plants and the chance of a waterfall. Rock gardens derived from two impulses in the 18C – the fashion for *follies (which included grottoes made of carefully selected geological specimens) and the desire to nurture plants from mountainous habitats in *botanic gardens. In one of the earliest rock gardens mosses were grown on pieces of lava brought from Iceland by Joseph *Banks.
