rock

An old word for any hard sweet, being short for 'rock sugar' and 'rock candy'. In recent times it has been specifically used of long brittle rods of hard sugar, brightly coloured on the outside, which are sold at holiday resorts. Rock often has the resort's name running miraculously through its length (Brighton rock being the best known in this respect) – a feat achieved by starting with large letters in a broad circle of soft sugar and rolling it into a long rod before it hardens. Edinburgh rock, by contrast, is a thinner stick of more crumbly texture – ridged on its surface and in pastel colours.
