Robert II
|
|
(1316–1390) King of Scotland from 1371, founding the royal house of *Stuart. He was the son of Walter, the hereditary steward of Scotland, and his claim to the throne came through his mother, Marjorie, the daughter of *Robert the Bruce. His life was distinguished largely by the extraordinary number of his offspring – four sons and five daughters by his first marriage (to Elizabeth Mure, solemnized only after the nine births, and so of doubtful legitimacy), two sons and two daughters by his second marriage, and at least eight other illegitimate sons. He was succeeded by the eldest son of his first marriage, *Robert III (see the *royal house of Scotland).
