(8000 in 1991) Market town in North Yorkshire which grew up round the Norman castle, established c.1071 on a cliff above the river Swale. The somewhat ruined castle walls date from this time and the tall keep was added a century later. The town's Georgian theatre, which opened in 1788, is the second oldest surviving playhouse in the country (only *Bristol is older). After long disuse it was restored and reopened in 1962.
