Innovation at *Durham Cathedral in the late 11C, prefiguring the delicacy of *Gothic design. Rib vaults rise from points above adjacent pillars on each side of a nave, meeting in the centre like a four-branched starfish. Together they support the fabric of the roof, which can be of lighter material because not in itself structural.
