Regent Street
|
|
(London W1) A thoroughfare driven through the West End by John *Nash in 1813–23, to join *Carlton House with the new *Regent's Park. Where it crossed *Piccadilly, it brought into being Piccadilly Circus. It then continued north in a stylish curving sweep known as the Quadrant. With covered pavements behind a colonnade, the Quadrant soon became London's most fashionable shopping area. The curve is all that remains of Nash's scheme, for this central part of Regent Street was redeveloped in a uniformly heavy style in the 1920s.
