Regent's Park
|
|
(London NW1) The main feature of John *Nash's development of central London for the Prince Regent. The area belonged to a convent until the 16C, when it was reserved as a royal hunting park after the *dissolution of the monasteries. Nash landscaped 197ha/487ac of open ground (a romantically meandering lake being the main feature) and enclosed the space with the elegant terraces which still survive. The park was completed in 1828, by which time it already had the new *London Zoo at its northern end. The Inner Circle now contains Queen Mary's Rose Garden, laid out in the 1930s, and the open-air theatre in which plays are performed each summer.
