Regency
|
|
The period 1811–20, during which the prince of Wales was given the powers of regent because of the insanity of *George III. The term is most often used to describe a style in the decorative arts and in architecture (where balconies with fanciful metal roofs and the widespread use of stucco are characteristic). In this sense it is usually extended to cover the entire period from the beginning of the century to the start of the *Victorian era.
