(foaled 1965) Bay gelding, by far the most famous racehorse of modern times for his unparalleled record in the *Grand National. In the period 1973–7 he won the race three times and was second in each of the intervening years (1975, 76). He then retired to a profitable career making celebrity appearances (even opening supermarkets), being affectionately known to his adoring public as 'Rummy'. By the 1990s it had become the tradition for him to lead the procession before the big race at Aintree, where there has been a bronze statue of him since 1988.
