Little Red Riding Hood

Tale introduced to English readers in 1729 by *Mother Goose. The foolish girl, who accepts the wolf in bed in a bonnet as her grandmother, is eaten at the end of the original story without more ado. Modern versions insist on a less bleak conclusion.
