The Red Barn
|
|
(1828) The first of many *melodramas on the most popular of real-life crimes. Maria Marten, daughter of a mole-catcher in Suffolk, was pregnant by William Corder when she arranged to meet him at the Red Barn on his father's farm so as to elope and get married in Ipswich. Her body was later found in the barn and Corder was hanged in August 1828 (little time was wasted in those days in getting a good story on to the stage).
