Rebecca
|
|
(1938) Novel by Daphne *du Maurier about an unnamed young woman (the narrator) who marries a Cornish landowner and widower, Maxim de Winter, but finds his home, Manderley, unwelcoming for two reasons: the hostility of the sinister housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, and the all-pervasive memory of his apparently perfect first wife, Rebecca. The drama only lightens at the end when Rebecca's image is discovered to be a fraud. The book was filmed in 1940 by Hitchcock, with Laurence Olivier as de Winter, Joan Fontaine as the young wife and Judith Anderson as Mrs Danvers.
