(1904–88, baron 1974) Archbishop of Canterbury 1961–74, after being bishop of Durham (1952–6) and archbishop of York (1956–61). He was by training a theologian – he was professor of divinity at the university of Durham (1940–50) and at Cambridge (1950–52) – and he was the author of many books. His meeting with Pope Paul VI in 1966 developed a personal link between the leaders of the two churches which had been pioneered by his predecessor, Geoffrey *Fisher.
