Allan Ramsay
|
|
(1713–84) Scottish portrait painter who from 1739 had successful studios in both London and Edinburgh. In the 1750s he began to be overshadowed by Reynolds, ten years his junior. His talent lay in the delicacy of his style, seen at its best in portraits of women (for example his second wife, c.1757, in the National Gallery of Scotland).
