Pressure group established in 1935 with the twin purposes of encouraging people to enjoy the countryside and of ensuring that public access is protected. It formed part of a long and continuing campaign to prevent the closure of footpaths and rights of way; England's first footpath protection society was set up in York as early as 1824.
