– The Great Western Railway (1844, National Gallery) An extraordinary vision of the steam age by *Turner. It shows a train, a black intrusion in the hazy gold of a river scene, crossing the Thames at Maidenhead. Ahead of it a hare runs down the line, with the implication that even so swift an animal will be caught by this monster of speed.
