The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
|
|
Classic fictional account of labour conditions and labour relations in the early 20C, written by Robert Tressall. This was the pen name of Robert Noonan (c.1870–1911), a house painter. His book, based on his time working for a builder in Hastings, was left in the care of his daughter and was published in an abridged form in 1914; the rediscovery of the manuscript in 1946 led to a full edition in 1955. The author is strongly critical not only of the grasping and corrupt employers in the fictional town of Mugsborough, but also of the uncomplaining workers – for they are the 'philanthropists' who so generously toil away to make money for others.
