Henry Raeburn
|
|
(1756–1823, kt 1822) Scottish portrait painter who was the first to establish himself as a major artist without making his career in London. He was famous for working without a preliminary drawing on the canvas, developing instead a rugged style of broad brush strokes with his sitters usually seen against dark backgrounds. An early and untypical picture, The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddington Loch (c.1784, National Gallery of Scotland), is rightly a popular favourite and has become one of Scotland's best-known images.
