Arthur Rackham
|
|
(1867–1939) Prolific illustrator of books in an angular and convoluted style (a Gothic version of *Art Nouveau) which was particularly well suited to such subjects as fairies and hobgoblins. His first great success was The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (1900). His last illustrations, which he was working on when he died, were for a new edition of The Wind in the Willows – a book which he had long regretted turning down for its first publication, in 1908, on the grounds that he was too busy.
