The Queen of Hearts
|
|
Nursery rhyme, first published in 1782 but probably older, about the king of hearts calling for the tarts made by the queen, only to find that they have been stolen by the knave. It was given added fame by *Alice in Wonderland, where the trial of the knave of hearts is the setting for the final nonsensical scene and is shown in *Tenniel's frontispiece.
