Queen Mother
|
|
A title sometimes used by the widow of a monarch who is also the mother of the reigning monarch. It has been held since 1952 by Queen Elizabeth, the widow of *George VI. Born in 1900 as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the youngest daughter of the earl of Strathmore, her family home was *Glamis Castle. She married the duke of York, the second son of George V, in Westminster Abbey in 1923. Her husband became king as a result of the *abdication crisis. It was a change which she was said not to welcome, but as queen during the war and during her long widowhood she has inspired great public affection, particularly in her very lively old age.
