(c.1583–1643) Parliamentary leader from the start of the Long Parliament. He instigated the impeachment of both *Strafford and *Laud, and was one of the *Five Members whom Charles I tried to arrest. He was responsible until his death for the broad strategy of parliament's campaign in the *English Civil War.
