Puffing Billy
|
|
(Science Museum) The world's first steam locomotive running on smooth rails, instead of the previous rack rails. Designed by William Hedley (1779–1843), Puffing Billy began work in 1813, hauling coal on the 8km/5m journey from Wylam colliery in Northumberland to wharves on the river Tyne. Another version, made at much the same time and known as Wylam Dilly, is in the Royal Museum of Scotland.
