Wilfred Pickles
|
|
(1904–78) Yorkshire broadcaster who was the first BBC newsreader with a strong regional accent. He became a national favourite as the host (assisted by his wife Mabel) of the most popular of Britain's radio quiz shows – Have A Go (1946–67). The answers and the prizes ('Give 'er the money, Barney!' was Pickles' catch phrase to his producer, Barney Colehan) were less important than the reminiscences and anecdotes which Pickles coaxed from his contestants.
