Princes in the Tower
|
|
*Edward V, the 12-year-old king of England, and his younger brother, Richard. They were together lodged in the *Tower of London when their uncle was proclaimed king as *Richard III, on 25 June 1483. They were seen from time to time playing in the garden, and then glimpsed occasionally through windows, but it was not long before the boys effectively disappeared. It is generally assumed that they were murdered, probably in August, on the orders of Richard. In 1674 a wooden chest was discovered beneath a staircase in the Tower, containing the bones of two children. These were placed in an urn in Westminster Abbey, and a scientific analysis in 1933 revealed that they were the remains of children of the correct ages.
